Mining
Mining is a rewarding but complex process demanding a lot from people and the environment. The extraction of gold, silver, copper, magnesium, and other minerals produces dust, noise, vibration, and, in underground operations, hazardous gas pockets.
These conditions impact worker safety, environmental compliance, community relations, and overall operational performance.
Going underground means entering a confined environment where air doesn’t circulate as it does on the surface. Dust from drilling, blasting, and excavation stays suspended. It doesn’t settle and circulates through ventilation systems. Fine particles like PM1, PM2.5, and PM10 penetrate deep into the lungs and cause long-term health effects like silicosis or chronic bronchitis.
Underground mines can also accumulate hazardous gases such as hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) or methane (CH₄) in poorly ventilated zones. These gases pose immediate safety risks and can escalate quickly without real-time detection.
Regulators mandate continuous air quality monitoring in underground mines because worker health is non-negotiable. Non-compliance carries penalties, stoppages, and liability.
Unlike underground environments, open pits are massive and open to wind and weather. But dust still remains a huge challenge. A blasting event in one area can create a dust plume carried by wind towards nearby communities, schools, and farms. Mining operations often sit within 5–20 kilometers of populated areas. Without monitoring, community exposure to dust leads to respiratory illnesses and legal challenges.
